Initial consultation

Initial consultation: £100 for one hour. This is credited against the fixed fee where the quoted fee exceeds £1,000. The consultation can take place in person, by video call, by telephone or by email.

How we charge

We usually agree a fixed fee for each stage of your matter, as an alternative to charging by the hour, so that you know the cost in advance. The fixed fee depends on the work involved and on the seniority of the caseworker, and we will explain how it has been worked out. Every case is different, so we agree the fee for your case before any work is carried out.

Work can also be charged by the hour, if we agree this with you in advance. Our hourly rates are set out on our costs page.

What our fixed fee covers

For the stage of the matter you have instructed us on, the fixed fee covers:

  • advice on your eligibility and the merits of your application;
  • reviewing your papers and guiding you on the documents needed;
  • preparing and submitting the application;
  • dealing with the Home Office as needed until a written decision is received.

VAT

Our fees are shown excluding VAT. We are VAT-registered (VAT number 477635154), and VAT is added to our fees at the standard rate of 20%. Home Office fees, the immigration health surcharge and tribunal fees are not subject to VAT.

Charges by third parties (not included in our fees)

These are paid to other organisations, are not part of our fees and are set by those organisations, which can change them from time to time. We explain and agree them with you before they are incurred.

  • Home Office application fees: these depend on the application and where you apply from. See the official visa fees tool (opens in a new tab) and UK visa fees tables (opens in a new tab) on GOV.UK.
  • Immigration health surcharge, where it applies: £1,035 a year in most cases; £776 a year for students and their dependants, Youth Mobility Scheme applicants and applicants under 18. See how much you have to pay (opens in a new tab).
  • Tribunal fee for an appeal to the First-tier Tribunal: £82 for an appeal decided without a hearing, or £144 with a hearing. See appeal fees and help with fees (opens in a new tab).
  • Barristers' fees, where a barrister is instructed for an appeal or judicial review: these depend on the barrister's charges at the time, and we always agree them with you before the barrister is instructed. As a guide, barristers’ fees are typically £500 to £1,500 for a First-tier Tribunal appeal hearing, £600 to £1,500 for an Upper Tribunal permission application or hearing, and from £1,000 to £3,000 for drafting a judicial review claim, plus VAT where the barrister is VAT-registered.
  • Court fees, where they apply.

Paying our fees

Fees are paid in instalments during the matter: 50% before we start work, and the balance before your application is submitted.

How long it takes

Once you have instructed us, we advise on the merits of your application, your eligibility and the documents needed. When we have all the documents and information we need, we can usually prepare and submit your application within 2 to 4 weeks.

If an application is refused

We will advise you on the options available, such as a fresh application, an administrative review, an appeal or a judicial review, and on the merits of each. We will explain the deadlines, the procedure, how long each stage is likely to take and the likely costs, including any external fees. We agree a fixed fee for each stage. For an appeal, for example, the stages include the initial submission, preparing the grounds and skeleton argument, responses, witness statements and the hearing bundle, and instructing a suitable barrister.

Who will carry out the work

Our immigration work is led by a solicitor with almost ten years' experience, specifically in immigration law. Their work is supervised by our Principal Solicitor, who has over ten years' experience.
